I seriously hadn't seen Ness., in about two or three years when I went to pick a patient up from Emergency, I saw a familiar head of hair and called out, "Ness.,?" She turned around and we had a brief catch up before I realised I had better get to picking up my new patient. We decided on a quick get together on our next days off so we picked South Side Diner!
Right across from the Southbank Cineplex! |
Here is their menu! The prices are pretty average for Brissie, with all meals being under $20 with mains ranging into upper 20's. I'm quite interested in coming back for dinner or that 2 for 1 Mac n cheese deal for Mondays. Anyway, we chose a seat outside and ordered pretty quickly.
Haha classic American sauces |
I wanted the coconut milkshake but it wasn't available so I got the peanut butter one instead. It had a large smear of peanut butter down the side and came out in a large metal cup, then got poured at the table. There was a good peanut butter flavour, but I'm not convinced that it was worth almost $10 for a milkshake. I was asked if I wanted whipped cream and a maraschino cherry on top but I declined. It was a good idea, because I saw several other tables with a drink that looked about 70% whipped cream.
Looks good |
There was enough for 3/4 of a second glass |
I ordered the six organic egg omelet with cheese and ham with a side of home fries. The egg omelet was quite large and stuffed with lots of shaved ham and melty cheese, I didn't take a picture of the interior because of how unappealing opened omelets look. The home fries were really disappointing, they came out cold, unsalted and quite soft.
Ehh |
Ness., picked the crispy fried ham hock hash with fried eggs, truffle salt and toast.
What's with the olive oil on the eggs? |
She said she enjoyed the meal in general but wondered why there was olive oil drizzled over her eggs. She also mentioned that the truffle salt was barely noticeable on the meal and that was the big attraction for her. I was surprised at the presentation for the hash, I was expecting like a potato roesti/hash sorta look with chunks of ham hock throughout it. Instead we got this super crunchy LOG of pulled ham hock, it makes me wonder how the chef got it to stay into this shape, since it appears to be like 90%+ meat.
So much meat |
Atmosphere: 6, brightly lit little diner. The interior was too full for me to sneak photos off without being noticed, but it has a bar, lots of fridges filled with American sodas and an entire wall of gleaming old fashioned milkshake makers.
Service: 6, absent mindedly attentive? Is that a thing? There were so many people there that day, they gave it a good crack but still a bit off the mark. When I saw the waiter look our way, he would fill up the coffee but he didn't offer milk or sugar until we asked. Ness., was grousing that that would never happen in the US from her trips there.
Food: solid 5.5, it's a bit on the fence for me. The breakfast menu is very basic although I am intrigued by the lunch and dinner items, the prices are very expensive as expected of the Southbank strip. That being said, there are better things to be had in the same neighbourhood and with better service to boot.
From now until Food Truck PheNomNomNom is on, I'm going to spam this at the end of my posts!
