On writing this post I asked myself, why did I originally want to go to this place again? Oh right, its because its a sushi train buffet. That's a pretty good reason in my books. Usual buffet rules applied in this place, don't leave excess food behind and order anything off the a la cart, sushi and noodle menu.

Memorise the plates in a sushi train! Always! |

The specials! |
We got there just as the restaurant was opening, I think we were the first customers of the day and the sushi train was very well stocked. Since we were the only people there, we were watched like hawks. We got a very enthusiastic welcome and were instantly seated and gotten drinks for, a peach Pokka Iced Tea and a Sprite. The restaurant was very dimly lit, with a large central space for the sushi train, which was a weird double belted conveyor belt and not an actual train. It was good because you easily reach over and grab the sushi you wanted if you hadn't decided the first time around. Just as a general note, everything was very fresh. Crunchy fried stuff, well seasoned sushi rice, shiny seaweed and stuff.
The first thing we got was a soft shell crab roll, the sushi chef told us it was a very popular choice. It was delicious, super crunchy deep fried goodness with the sweetness of crab meat, crunchy coleslaw and mayo. Crunch, crunch, crunch was all you heard us doing. I was very reluctant to share this with my Boyfriend, I actually went for the legs first. It was difficult trying to get it all in one bite though.

Tuna and avocado wasn't great, you get that from a can and roll it yourself. Still a good amount of tuna and decently seasoned.

Tuna and avocado! |
Chicken katsu and avocado. Nothing spectacular as well. Crunchy fried chicken.

Chicken katsu and avocado! |
Teriyaki chicken and avocado was fucking fantastic. Its exactly how I like my teriyaki chicken, soaked right through the flesh and using pieces of dark meat, so it was especially tender. My god, it was fantastic. I would come back here just for the Teriyaki chicken if nothing else.

What is this even, chicken katsu nigiri? It wasn't anything special. The rice puffs got everywhere though, we left such a huge mess I was a bit embarrassed.
|
Chicken Karaage Nigiri? |
Chicken karaage was terrible. It was well cooked, hot and that was about it. There was very little batter on the pieces, it didn't come with the spicy powder that we requested and it didn't have that ginger, soy or sake/mirin flavour at all. We still finished it all though.

Sad Chicken karaage |
This is the last thing we ate, blow torched egg salad, scallop and salmon. It was actually really delicious and I have no idea why it was blow torched, because it did nothing for the appearance and just made it look scorched. It was very creamy and just melted in your mouth.

Salmon, egg salad and scallops.
I guessed cheese sauce initially. |
I think we ended up just paying the sushi prices and not actually opting for buffet prices since it would be pricier if we had done that. Despite my lacklustre reviews of the sushi pieces, I did actually like it, the food wasn't fantastic, it was really well presented, service was good, prices were reasonable and I would probably go here again.
Kimono:
Atmosphere: 6, it was very Japanese. I really liked how enthusiastically we were greeted and fare welled.
Service: 6, mostly attentive staff. Everyone had a smile on their face, they were enthusiastic and happy to fulfil our requests. They were a bit lapse though, we weren't checked up on very much even though we were the only people there.
Food: 6, it was solid. I'd go there again for specific dishes, but the majority of things that are good at every sushi train were terrible here.
what are the good things at every sushi train and what was so bad about this restaurant. please answer ^^
ReplyDeleteI personally think every sushi train should do the classic stuff right, the old faithful that you can go to every restaurant and expect a good feed from. Like with yum cha restaurants how you can judge the quality from their prawn dumplings. For Italian restaurants how good their pasta is. I guess its your safe bet in the end haha.
DeleteI always feel like for sushi trains I should try their karaage chicken, inari - bean curd skin stuffed with sushi rice, some grilled eel, their tamago - rolled egg omelet, their teriyaki chicken and how good the quality of their raw salmon is. That being said, I like to try things that are a bit different on the menu too.
I feel like a lot of the sushi we ate was a bit under seasoned, the presentation was unappealing at times and while we ate everything, it wasn't worth coming back to.
