RJIE: Re Del Gelato

VGirl and I went here after we had dinner at Jakarta, we just wanted a quick snack before we went home so gelato it was!

There was a huge variety of different flavours but we were pretty boring and got our stock standard favourites. There's also quite a fair few seats inside where you can sit and chat with friends.

RJIE 9: Shlix - Lime and Mango Gelati

This has the most unfortunately named ice cream shop I've ever heard. Why is that you say? I dunno maybe you be on the internet more, or maybe if you know what I'm talking about, you should be on the internet less? Shlix shlix shlix. 

Anyway, this is a little home made salad and wrap bar by day and a gelato bar by day and night. Its located in the Valley and prides itself on wholesome healthy, no preservative, no artificial ingredients, low fat, low air volume and fresh Dairy Farmers milk for all their ice cream. They have a suggestion box/page for any ideas for new flavours, they have some really interesting ones there and rotate quite frequently. Here is their website.

If you're a bit confused by the air volume thing, air is necessary for ice cream that doesn't resemble a rock, a lot of cheap ice creams churn air into their ice creams for added volume. Added air, also makes ice cream a lot fluffier, but lets not forget that ice cream is sold by VOLUME and not weight. As a result you can typically tell a high quality ice cream, the denser, creamier and thicker it is, the higher quality it is. For example, compare say a no name brand of vanilla ice cream in a 1L box compared to the same volume of an expensive brand like Movenpick, Haagen-Daaz or Ben and Jerry's. The expensive brand is in a much smaller box but contains the same volume of ice cream, typically a better flavour and a much higher price tag.

The day we went was after we went to Himalayan Cafe and we had a lime and mango gelati on a waffle cone. I always choose mango gelato, I think its the best flavour in the world and is hard to balance, since you don't want a sickly sweet mango flavour, you want a bit of acidity in there too. The colour was pale but it was exactly like I had bitten in a sweet/sour ripe bowen mango, delicious!

The lime was very much the same, white but you could smell zestiness straight away. I can't describe it, it tasted exactly like what you want lime ice cream to taste like, sweet, sour and tangy all at once. 

I highly recommend this shop and advise you to take advantage of their loyalty card system and try all the new flavours!

RJIE 2: Maui Brownie Madness

New tag! RJIE - random junk I eat. Sometimes I eat things that I can't be bothered to make a formal blog post about, whether it be because I can't be bothered, I didn't take enough photos at the time or there's really nothing more to say about it. Its just things I've eaten and my opinion on them. Who knows, maybe I can persuade you to have something you normally wouldn't think of eating? Or dissuade you from eating something that might absolutely horrific?

You know the kind of thing I'm talking about, when you go out with a friend or grocery shopping with one and they go, "Oh xxxxxxx I love that!" And since your friend loves it, you think of trying it, even though you normally would never think of getting that stuff. I went shopping with my Boyfriend and he buys stuff I would in a million years think of getting or making, he loves AM noodles which apparently are the "most healthy" instant noodle on the market, he gets bean sprouts and alfalfa sprouts as snacks and he convinced me to try pesto and cheese toasties, fantastic by the way. I will never buy any of these items ever, but its good to know. I've done the same to him with Danish feta, Banneton garlic turkish bread, Boggo Road market fruit punch and plenty of other things I'm probably forgetting.

The opposite is also true, where a friend will go, "oh god, never try that ever, ever, ever." I'm probably among the more vocal of my friends though, in how much I dislike or like a place or food.

Maui Brownie Madness! Good god, that is a pretty picture.

After my sister and I went to the Sushi Train in Chatswood, we decided to get some dessert and I got myself a single scoop waffle cone of this concoction for about $6. It was a much smaller cone that the one I had gotten at Gelati Madness at West End only a few days ago, so I was disappointed  in that aspect.

Apparently its a chocolate yoghurt, brownie bits, macadamia nuts and chocolate fudge ribboned throughout. I couldn't notice the difference and wasn't aware that it was a yoghurt based ice cream at all! It does explain why my lactose intolerance flared up so bad afterwards though. I thought it was decent, I found the flavour to be overly rich and to get a bit annoying to eat after a while, even the nuts didn't offer enough of a contrast to me. Wouldn't eat again, but I would if someone offered it to me.
